MIXED ENERGY

    First Time in Key West

Three priorities: get on the water, see the sunset, eat key lime pie. Everything else is gravy.

First time in Key West? The whole island is 4 miles long. You don't need a car — you need a bike, a sunscreen plan, and one good reservation. The locals' rule: get on the water before noon, hit Mallory Square for sunset, eat something Cuban for dinner. That's the trip. Here's the version we'd hand a friend.

    IF YOU DO NOTHING ELSE
    • Sunset sail on a tall ship — the Schooner America 2.0 is the postcard one
    • A half-day reef snorkel — the only living coral barrier reef in the U.S. is offshore
    • Mallory Square sunset celebration — free, nightly, two hours before sundown
    • Cuban coffee + a Cuban mix sandwich, ideally at 5 Brothers or Sandy's
    • One slow walk down Duval — it's the spine of the island
    • Key lime pie at Kermit's or Blue Heaven (debate is real)
    • Truman's Little White House OR Hemingway House — pick one, both are great
    WHAT TO SKIP
    • Don't rent a car for in-town. Parking is brutal. Rent a bike or a 4-seater.
    • Don't book the cheapest sunset cruise — the difference between $40 and $60 is real here.
    • Don't skip breakfast — most boats leave the dock before lunch.
    • Don't try to do Dry Tortugas on the same day as a sunset cruise. It's a full-day commitment.
